The works presented by Jannis Kounellis consisted of real-life elements and focused on the carefully measured human scale and constant reference to man (moral quality, identity-related matters, memory and time). Jannis Kounellis for his solo exhibition in Santander wanted to transform and occupy the space in the Botín Foundation room, devising it as an installation or single work. | |

Dates: from 24 June to 30 August 2009. Place: Botín Foundation Exhibition Room. Exhibition curator: Enid Schildkrout. Dinastía y Divinidad: Arte IFE en la antigua Nigeria, is a Botín Foundation Project which thanks to the generosity of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria and the collaboration of the Museum for African Art in New York could be displayed in different institutions and presently continues its tour at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (USA).The exhibition provided an insight into one of the world´s most important art complexes through 109 beautiful and virtuous pieces made from materials such as bronze, terracotta, stone and glass. | |
After the exhibition in Santander, the Botín Foundation promoted the European touring exhibition which, with the help of the Ministry of Culture, could be visited in the exhibition rooms of the Academy of Fine Arts in San Fernando, Madrid (18 September- 13 December 2009) and the British Museum in London (4 March – 6 June 2010). 4.Museum for African Art in Nueva York (11 November 2011 – May 2012). | |

Dates: from 31 July to 27 September 2009. Place: Villa Iris. Exhibition curator: Daniela Tilkin. Rather than a thematic exhibition, Geografías Íntimas was an encounter with six artists -Tarek Zaki, Viyé Diba, Samuel Fosso, Nabil Boutros, Robin Rhode and William Kentridge- and a reflection on the dichotomy between what can be seen and what cannot in the "cartographies" which each of them trace in time and in the mental space. The exhibition wanted to offer a panorama on contemporary African art, complementary to the Ife art exhibition (12th - 15th AD). | |

Dates: from 2 April to 17 May 2009. Place: Botín Foundation Exhibition Room. Exhibition curator: Zahira Veliz. The selection of 54 drawings from Alonso Cano (1601-1667) gave the visitor an insight into one of the most complete artists of the Spanish Golden Age: painter, sketcher, engraver, altarpiece sculptor, designer, architect, sculptor...., who cultivated the arts in their most varied forms and was a central 17th century figure. Drawing was fundamental as a part of his creative process in his different styles. A major part of the works displayed came from foreign museums and institutions. | |

Dates: from 23 January to 15 March 2009. Place: Botín Foundation Exhibition Room. Artists who were awarded the Foundation´s scholarship as part of its 15th programme: Leonor Antunes, Christian Bagnat, Rafel G. Bianchi, Cabello/Carceller, Mira Bernabeu, Isabel María, Carlos Irijalba, Renata Lucas and Iñaki Garmendia, display in Santander their artistic projectsand works produced during the year. This is not a thesis exhibition, thematic exhibition, geographical or generational model, but rather an opportunity for artists to exhibit their most personal and intimate creation and reflection itineraries. | |
| -LECTURAS TRANSVERSALES. CULTURA, POBREZA Y MEGÁPOLIS. | |
Dates: from 9 January to 14 June 2009. Place: Villa Iris. Exhibition curator: Kevin Power. The Botín Foundation art collection housed the work of the workshops´directors -artists with a solid background and extensive experience- and the works of artists that were awarded with the Visual Arts scholarship, with their various search and research itineraries. Thirteen artists whose works belong to the Foundation´s collection, Lara Almarcegui, Atsuko Arai, Javier Arce, Carlos H. Blanco , Patricia Dauder, Fernanda Fragateiro, Sandra Gamarra, Rogelio López Cuenca, Tomás Ochoa, Ester Partegas, Miguel Ángel Rebollo, Montserrat Soto, Patricia Sousa and Juan Uslé asked us to question the way in which we belong to an urban context and the need to pay attention to its complexity, seeking solutions in a climate of dialogue to the dramatic and often violent chaos that surrounds us. | |
